Essential Skills Post Pandemic

With many patients in Scotland now being seen for their first dental check-up in over two years, what are the essential skills that general dental practitioners will need as they work through the back-log? The answer: the ability to diagnose periodontal disease, and offer appropriate treatment; the ability to competently extract broken down teeth; and the confidence in treating large cavities with composite filling materials.

As the exodus from NHS to private gathers pace amongst these dentists, GDPs will be thinking about using this moment to up-skill in order to do such things as provide implant restorations for their own patients. To help with this, starting in April, Vermilion will be hosting an in-person CPD Programme throughout 2022.

The Programme has been created based on the feedback from delegates who attended last year’s CPD courses, and from our hugely successful Symposium in October of last year. We will be offering courses that focus on:

  • Diagnosing and treating periodontal disease

Our periodontal team of Dr Louise O’Dowd, Dr Jackie Davidson, hygienists Michaela Zilinska and Debbie McKenzie will be delivering three Monday evening talks on diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. This insidious condition is rife right now, and the adverse events of the Covid-19 pandemic seem to be compounding the disease resulting in unprecedented case complexity.

  • Practical skills in oral surgery

Extracting teeth is not easy. For many younger dental colleagues in particular, removing broken down teeth is a part of their job that they find hugely stressful. Vermilion’s specialists in oral surgery will be offering oral surgery practical skills training – a Tuesday evening double-header in the Spring and in the Autumn.

  • Restorative dentistry masterclass

On Saturday 26th August, we will be hosting an international expert in restorative dentistry for a free Masterclass at our clinic in Edinburgh, looking in particular at composite and the treatment of large cavities in the post-pandemic patient.

  • Refer and restore

Finally, Refer and Restore is a concept that many referral practices have adopted but which the team at Vermilion has been offering since 2012. The Refer and Restore Programme of 2022 will be a deep-dive into the restoration of single implant crowns. Over three Thursday afternoon sessions (28 April, 19 May, 9 June) we will cover:

    • Case selection
    • Live implant surgery
    • Implant impressions analogue and digital
    • Crown design and material choices
    • Crown fit
    • Maintenance
    • Supportive periodontal therapy
    • Complications and the business case

The course fee is £750 and includes a Southern Implants Restorative Kit.
