Why Dental Hygiene Matters

Caring for your teeth and gums is essential for your overall health. Gum disease, a common cause of tooth loss, can be associated with serious medical conditions such as strokes and heart disease. Our hygienists prioritise preventive care to preserve your gum health, detecting and addressing oral health problems at an early stage.

During your hygienist appointment, we remove stubborn plaque and tartar, and coach you on what to do at home to maximise your chances of retaining your teeth. This not only shields your smile from harmful bacteria but also contributes to fresher breath. Prevention is better than cure.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

During your appointment at Vermilion, our experienced dental hygienists in Edinburgh and Kelso will carefully assess your periodontal indices, collecting objective measurements of the status of your gums. They will share this data with you and formulate a treatment plan bespoke to your needs based on these numbers. They will set targets, in particular for your plaque score!

Professional mechanical plaque removal at Vermilion involves the use of EMS Airflow and ultrasonics to render the roots of your teeth free of tartar. This is highly skilled work which, with modern equipment including heated water, is not at all painful. Tartar is the enemy. With tartar professionally removed your gums will return to health – and your breath will smell better. This has a big impact on a patient’s confidence.

Finally, and most importantly, our hygienists will take the time to educate you on proper oral hygiene measures and techniques, tailored to your individual needs, including brushing, flossing and using interdental brushes. It is amazing how few people actually know how to correctly brush their teeth!

Our hygienists understand that each patient has unique dental needs. Whether you have bridges, dentures, orthodontic treatment or dental implants, we’ll provide specific care to address those needs effectively. With our expertise and guidance, you can feel confident that your mouth can stay clean and healthy between appointments and beyond.

At Vermilion, we go beyond standard oral hygiene services to offer specialised treatments like implant care treatment and tooth whitening.

Implant Cleaning

While regular brushing and flossing are usually sufficient to maintain implant cleanliness, occasional professional cleaning may be necessary to eliminate stubborn bacteria. We advise scheduling specialist dental implant cleaning regularly for thorough plaque and calculus removal. Our dentists use the latest equipment and techniques, like ultrasonic scalers and EMS Airflow, to target hard-to-reach areas, promoting the longevity of your implants and overall oral well-being.

Teeth Whitening

At Vermilion, our dental hygienists offer professional teeth whitening treatments to enhance your smile. During your appointment, we explain the procedure and take impressions for custom trays if needed. The treatment consists of four 15-minutes sessions, where a special light activates the whitening gel applied to your teeth. Afterwards, you’ll receive whitening trays to use at home, included in the overall cost. This treatment is not sensitive on the teeth due to the product Vermilion uses.

Dental Hygiene FAQs

Dental hygienists are registered dental professionals who educate you to manage your own oral care and keep your whole mouth healthy through the prevention and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. By educating patients on how to maintain healthy gums and having a holistic approach to a patient’s general health, many chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis can be positively affected.

A dental hygienist is a dental professional and an oral health educator who takes a holistic approach to managing and maintaining the ongoing health of their patients. At Vermilion, our dental hygienists also assist in the maintenance of your dental implants and conduct clinical gum examinations. We will professionally remove plaque from above the gum line and, in some cases, below the gum with the use of local anaesthetics if required.
