We are delighted to celebrate an extraordinary achievement by one of our clinicians, Dr. Steve Bonsor, who has graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Edinburgh.
This achievement is particularly significant as Steve is among the final cohort to receive the DDS from the University of Edinburgh before this historic programme comes to a close, marking the end of an important chapter in postgraduate dental education.
A Doctorate of Dental Surgery is one of the highest academic qualifications within the dental profession. Unlike the taught degree, it is research-based designed for dental professionals who wish to develop advanced research skills whilst making a contribution to the field.
As an endodontic clinician, Steve’s research focused on improving the success of root canal treatment. His thesis, “The Role of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy in the Disinfection of the Root Canal System of Human Permanent Teeth In Vivo,” investigated how combining a light source with a photosensitive antimicrobial agent could improve the disinfection of infected root canals.
The aim of this research was to enhance the removal of bacteria from within the root canal system, helping to reduce infection, improve healing and increase the long-term success of root canal treatment. Ultimately, this research has the potential to improve patient outcomes by increasing the likelihood of preserving natural teeth.
Completing a DDS represents years of dedication, intellectual curiosity and a commitment to advancing dentistry through evidence-based research.
Steve’s success is a testament to his passion for lifelong learning and his desire to continually improve the care he provides for patients.
