Vermilion - The Smile Experts

The Value of Early Orthodontic Assessment for Growing Smiles

A child’s smile is constantly evolving. As teeth erupt and jaws develop, early orthodontic assessment helps monitor growth and identify when intervention may be beneficial.

When clinically appropriate, early treatment can help to:

  • Guide erupting teeth into more favourable positions
  • Regulate jaw width
  • Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Address habits such as thumb sucking that may affect bite development

Not every child requires immediate treatment. In many cases, early assessment focuses on observation rather than action. At Vermilion, treatment is only recommended when there is a clear clinical benefit, with ongoing monitoring guiding the right timing for referral.

Signs to Look Out For

Some orthodontic concerns are subtle. Indicators that may warrant an assessment include:

  • Early or delayed loss of primary teeth
  • Crowding or poorly positioned erupting teeth
  • Jaw shifts, jaw noises, or bite concerns (deep bite, open bite, protrusive incisors)
  • Teeth or jaws that appear out of proportion to the face

With specialist expertise and advanced technology, we can often identify and manage developing issues before they become more complex.
