Braces are an orthodontic treatment used to straighten and align teeth, aiming to improve overall appearance and create a smile you will love. Braces work by applying gentle pressure to the teeth they are fixed to, encouraging them to gradually move into their corrected position and straighten the patient’s smile.
Whilst often used for aesthetic results, braces can also be used to treat complex orthodontics problems such as overcrowding and bite problems, offering individuals a surgery-free solution for some dental issues.
Your initial consultation will involve any necessary X-rays and analysis to ensure that your orthodontic clinician has the information required to plan your treatment and ensure that the correct type of brace has been selected, and progress can be tracked.
Your orthodontic clinician may recommend removing any permanent teeth that are causing overcrowding and will perform any extractions just before or just after the fitting of your braces or retainers. Following this, your appointment structure and plan will differ depending on the treatment selected for your smile.
After regular check-ins with your orthodontic clinician throughout your plan, you will be told when it is time for the removal of any fixed braces. You will be recommended to wear plastic retainers that are shaped around your new teeth placements, whilst encouraged to continue regular brushing and oral hygiene practices to ensure you retain your new smile.
The type of brace chosen for your treatment will be discussed with your dentist at your appointment to ensure that you are happy and informed at every stage of your orthodontics journey. The orthodontic treatment recommended will depend on various factors, including the severity of the teeth mispositioning, any gum disease problems and the age of the patient. Adult braces are a common type of orthodontic treatment and can offer an effective treatment for some patients, including clear braces, ceramic styles or lingual braces.
Also known as “train tracks”, fixed metal braces are the traditional and most common type of braces that individuals are often familiar with. Fixed braces consist of small metal brackets that are cemented to the tooth enamel and joined together with wire, aimed at straightening teeth by encouraging teeth to move and grow in a very particular way and deliver a brand-new smile.
Fixed braces are often used for children, as they are a durable option and require minimal input from the patient to gain results. They can be personalised with coloured elastic bands for a more unique smile throughout the treatment plan.
Throughout a fixed brace treatment, you will be required to visit your orthodontist for regular check-ups to tighten wires, replace broken elastics or add new springs.
Similar to traditional fixed metal braces, ceramic braces are a more discreet option as they use tooth-coloured ceramic brackets that more closely blend in with the teeth. They are glued to the teeth and connected by a wire that encourages teeth to grow in the desired direction.
Ceramic braces are more fragile than their traditional counterparts, and the elastic ties can be easily discoloured by smoking and some foods, so should be considered very carefully as a treatment option.
Invisible braces offer patients a discreet solution to straightening teeth using plastic custom-built retainers. Clear aligners are a minimalistic and removable option for those who are looking for straighter teeth but who do not want to wear braces.
Removable aligners can often offer a more comfortable journey to a straighter smile than traditional braces, as well as fewer orthodontic visits and no wires or brackets.
Unlike traditional braces, lingual braces are fixed behind the teeth as opposed to the front.
They offer a discreet option for misaligned teeth by glueing the brackets to the back of the teeth and connecting these with metal wires. Lingual braces are an invisible alternative for patients who do not want traditional braces and for whom clear aligners are not an option.
Removable and functional appliances are a fantastic orthodontic treatment used in the early years to correct jaw misalignments and individual teeth positions. These removable options can be taken out for eating, cleaning, sports and playing a musical instrument.

The best age to have braces fitted will vary by patient, however, the optimum age is generally identified as around 12 or 13 years of age. At this point, the child’s mouth and jaws are still growing and often allow orthodontic treatment to have a greater chance to showcase the best results and move teeth into the right position.
This being said, we work with many adult patients who require orthodontic treatment to straighten their teeth with a brace or clear aligner.
You may experience some minor pain or discomfort following the initial fitting of your new braces or a tightening appointment as your teeth begin to adjust, however most patients find that this eases off quickly. If you are concerned about the discomfort of braces, please speak to our team to discover more about our sedation options and if these may be an option for your treatments.
If you are unable to attend, please contact our reception team to reschedule. We require 48 hours’ notice to cancel or re-arrange appointments. Failure to attend or failing to provide 48 hours notice when cancelling appointments will result in you being charged a fee of up to 100% depending on treatment fee or based on appointment length at £350 per hour, whichever is less.
We will always take exceptional circumstances into account if the unforeseen happens and you have reason to cancel an appointment at short notice.
